A wetlands project area near Newswanger Road in the village of Rock
held a GREAT EGRET during the week.

On 8/29 birds included LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 26 Field Sparrows, 10
Song Sparrows, 16 Indigo Buntings, 7 Common Yellowthroats, Cedar
Waxwing, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, Chestnut-sided Warbler, 2 Black-
and-white Warblers, Killdeer, Great Blue Heron, Tufted Titmouse, 11
Gray Catbirds, 5 American Goldfinches, Blue Jay, Mourning Dove, and
Magnolia Warbler.

SGL-80 at ROCK: (tc)
On 8/29 birds included 2 Wood Thrushes, Red-eyed Vireo, 2 Eastern
Towhees, Tufted Titmouse, American Robin, Eastern Phoebe, Turkey
Vulture, 3 Common Yellowthroats, 5 Gray Catbirds, Blue Jays, and
Mourning Dove.

SGL-110 PORT CLINTON: (dk,nt)
On 8/22 there was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER reported.

PORT CLINTON: (dw)
On 8/19 a juvenile BALD EAGLE flew over the borough, and 8 Turkey
Vultures were circling overhead.

SGL-132 HEGINS: (dk)
On 8/25 birds included another OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER report,
as well as 2 Eastern Wood-Pewees, 4 Blackburnian Warblers, 4 Black-
throated Green Warblers, Canada Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Pileated
Woodpecker, 2 Chestnut-sided Warblers, Hairy Woodpecker, House
Wren, and 3 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers.

SGL-227 TUSCARORA (dk)
On 8/28 birds included Pine Warbler, Prairie Warbler, 4 Black-throated
Green Warblers, 3 Chestnut-sided Warblers, 3 American Redstarts,
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee,
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Blue-headed Vireo, Magnolia Warbler, Blue
Jay, an imm. Sharp-shinned Hawk, a large number of Black-capped
Chickadees, and Tufted Titmice.

SWEET ARROW LAKE: (dd)
On 8/27 birds included large numbers of swallows, including Barn, Tree,
Northern Rough-winged, and CLIFF SWALLOW. Other birds were Northern Flicker, Belted Kingfisher, Carolina Wren, Northern Mockingbird, Wood Duck, American Black Duck, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and
GREAT EGRET.

AIR PRODUCTS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY: (jd)
On 8/26 birds included 2 Wood Ducks, Great Blue Heron, Osprey,
3 Killdeer, 20 Eastern Kingbirds, Eastern Phoebe, American Crow,
WILLOW FLYCATCHER, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 5 Gray Catbirds,
30 Cedar Waxwings, 3 Common Yellowthroats, 2 Ovenbirds, Black-
throated Green Warbler, Canada Warbler, 2 Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-
breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, American Goldfinch, and House
Finch.
On 8/29 there was an excellent movement of migrants, including 37
species, some of which were: PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 5 Red-eyed
Vireo, 2 Blue-headed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Hooded Warbler,
2 Black-and-white Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Chestnut-
sided Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, 10 Scarlet Tanager, 4 Indigo
Bunting, 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 30 Cedar Waxwing, Eastern Phoebe, 10 Eastern Kingbird, 10 Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Downy
Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher, 3 Tufted Titmouse, 15 Black-capped
Chickadee, 10 Blue Jay, 2 Chipping Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Great
Blue Heron, Green Heron, Osprey, 7 Wood Duck, 3 Gray Catbird, 10
House Finch, 2 American Goldfinch, Common Grackle, 2 American
Robin, 2 Mourning Dove, 2 Mallard, 3 House Sparrow, 2 European
Starling, and 2 American Crow. This list is reported to be only about
50% of the birds moving through the Sanctuary on the morning of 8/29.

McADOO - near VAN HOEKLEN GREENHOUSE: (jd)
On 8/26 at a pond with some exposed mud birds included 8 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 15
Killdeer, 12 Canada Geese, and 2 Mallards.
On 8/29 there was a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER reported from this location,
as well as 7 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 15
Killdeer, 10 Mallards, and 15 Canada Geese.

NEW RINGGOLD: (dw)
On 8/18 a pair of young Eastern Screech-Owls were heard vocalizing
their youthful call.
On 8/27 an Osprey was seen flying over the Little Schuylkill, and 17
migrant COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen during the evening.

WEST PENN TWP. - CLAMTOWN: (bb)
Birds for the week included Northern Cardinal, Red-tailed Hawk, Wild
Turkey, American Crow, Mourning Dove, Downy Woodpecker, Tufted
Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Blue
Jay, American Goldfinch, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, Canada Goose,
and Turkey Vulture.

HAWK MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY: (db & hms counters)
On 8/29 there were 11 BALD EAGLES counted, as well as 4 Sharp-
shinned Hawks, 15 Broad-winged Hawks, 13 Ospreys, and 14 American
Kestrels. 2004 seasonal totals are 34 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 11
Cooper's Hawks, 19 Red-tailed Hawks, 1 Red-shouldered Hawk, 105
Broad-winged Hawks, 33 BALD EAGLES, 5 Northern Harriers, 63
Ospreys, 1 Merlin, and 51 American Kestrels. Overall seasonal total
is 330. Non-raptor highlights include numerous migrating swallows,
including Purple Martins, Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Northern
Rough-winged Swallows. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are also moving
through in good numbers including a one day high count of 40 birds.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER
were observed this past week.

Comments: Schuylkill County has recorded 135 breeding species since
we began keeping records in the early 70's. Having just checked on the
county reports already submitted to the 2004 Breeding Bird Atlas, there
have been at least 84 species listed as being confirmed.

Hairy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, and Eastern Screech-Owl.
On 8/22 there was an OSPREY, Killdeer, and SPOTTED SANDPIPER.

HIDDEN VALLEY: (aml)
Birds for the past two weeks included 2 Great Horned Owls, Great Blue
Heron, Gray Catbird, Tree Swallow, Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk,
Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Crow, Northern Mockingbird, Cedar
Waxwing, Barn Swallow, Song Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, American
Robin, and Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

TUMBLING RUN WATERSHED: (tc)
On 8/19 birds included 2 COMMON MERGANSERS, Eastern Screech-
Owl, 2 Chestnut-sided Warblers, 2 Worm-eating Warblers, Prairie
Warbler, Hooded Warbler, CANADA WARBLER, House Wren, Cedar
Waxwing, HERMIT THRUSH, Wood Thrush, Veery, Ruffed Grouse,
Great Horned Owl, Eastern Screech-Owl, and BARRED OWL.

COAL MOUNTAIN ROAD: (cl,aml)
On 8/16 a Pileated Woodpecker was seen, as well as Tufted
Titmouse, American Goldfinch, and Red-tailed Hawk.
Other birds reported were Wild Turkeys with young, Black-capped
Chickadee feeding young, Northern Cardinal, Carolina Wren, and
Song Sparrow.

WEST PENN TWP. - north of NEW RINGGOLD: (ddol,ldol)
On 8/16 there were 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, a few Turkey
Vultures, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Great Blue Heron.

WEST PENN TWP. - CLAMTOWN: (bb)
Birds for the week include Wood Thrush, Black-capped Chickadee,
Tufted Titmouse, Downy Woodpecker, American Goldfinch, American
Robin, Wild Turkey, Turkey Vulture, Great Blue Heron, Blue Jay,
Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Mourning Dove, Rock Pigeon, LEAST
FLYCATCHER, and White-breasted Nuthatch.

LAKE WYNONAH: (dkl)
An Eastern Screech-Owl was heard singing this week. Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds and Black-capped Chickadees were prominent. Two birds
flew high over the lake which could have been terns, but a positive ID was
not possible to confirm the species.

HAWK MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY: (db,dkr)
Non-raptor species reported on 8/15 included Common Yellowthroat,
Ovenbird, American Redstart, Black-throated Green Warbler, Black-
throated Blue Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler,
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo,
Great Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Pileated Woodpecker,
and Hairy Woodpecker.
2004 Fall Hawk Count on 8/22 and season total as follows:

On 8/1 there were two SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and a Killdeer at the
lake.
On 8/5 birds included GREAT EGRET, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMOR-
ANT, Green Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Wood Thrush, Red-eyed Vireo,
Indigo Bunting, Carolina Wren, Cedar Waxwings, and Eastern Screech-
Owl.

TUMBLING RUN WATERSHED: (tc)
On 8/5 birds included OSPREY, Great Blue Heron, Barn Swallows,
Tufted Titmouse, Hooded Warbler, and SPOTTED SANDPIPER.

SCHWARTZ VALLEY ROAD: (sw)
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds seem to be declining at this location for
an undertermined reason, with only one male visiting five feeders.
On 8/7 an unfortunate roadkill WHIP-POOR-WILL was found on nearby
Moyer's Station Road. A GREAT EGRET was also seen feeding along
Schwartz Valley Road.

HIDDEN VALLEY: (aml)
Birds for the week included 2 House Wrens, Northern Flicker, Indigo
Bunting, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Turkey
Vulture, Great Blue Heron, Gray Catbird, Cedar Waxwing, Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, American Robin, House
Finch, Northern Mockingbird, Northern Cardinal, Mourning Dove, House
Sparrow, and American Goldfinch.

RINGTOWN RESERVOIR: (tc)
On 8/6 birds included OSPREY, Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vulture, and
2 Red-tailed Hawks.

SHENANDOAH (old ice block) RESERVOIRS: (tc)
On 8/6 birds included SPOTTED SANDPIPER, Red-tailed Hawk, 2 Turkey
Vultures, and 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.

HAWK MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY: (js,km,dkr)
A pre-season hawkwatch at the north lookout on 8/6 yielded Broad-winged Hawk, juvenile NORTHERN HARRIER, and an adult BALD
EAGLE.
On 8/8 the North Lookout reported a Cooper's Hawk, 2 BALD EAGLES,
2 American Kestrels, NORTHERN HARRIER, and a Broad-winged Hawk.
There was also a WINTER WREN and a HERMIT THRUSH both singing
on the north side of the ridge. The official hawkwatch at the Sanctuary
will commence on 8/15 and run through 12/15.

ACOPIAN CENTER: (sg)
Swallows have been noticably massing in the area of Hawk Mountain's
Acopian Center for Conservation and Learning, preparing for their ensuing
migration.

OWL CREEK WATERSHED: (dkr,nt)
On 8/6 birds included SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a family of 3 Hooded
Warblers, Belted Kingfisher, and two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS.

WEST PENN TWP. - CLAMTOWN: (bb)
On 8/7 an apparent GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET was seen with 3
juveniles. Other birds included Tufted Titmice with young, as well as
White-breasted Nuthatches. Many young Wild Turkeys are being seen,
as well as American Robins, and American Crows.
On 8/8 birds included Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Tufted Titmouse, Black-
capped Chickadee, American Robin, Baltimore Oriole, Chipping Sparrow,
Song Sparrow, Eastern Kingbirds with young, Gray Catbirds with young,
Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, American Goldfinch, House Finch, Red-
bellied Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Wild Turkey, Blue Jay,
Green Heron, American Crow, Barn Swallow, Tree Swallow, Red-eyed
Vireo, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Wood Thrush, Mourning Dove, and
Rock Pigeon.

WEST PENN TWP. - north of NEW RINGGOLD: (dd,ld)
Birds for the week in this area included Northern Cardinals, Black-capped
Chickadees, American Goldfinches, Eastern Bluebirds, Tree and Barn
Swallows, Wild Turkeys, Red-tailed Hawk, Turkey Vulture, Killdeer, and
Northern Flicker.

NEW RINGGOLD: (dw)
Recently BOBOLINKS were seen, probably nesting in the high grasses
of a local field.

OUTWOOD: (ks)
Birds reported from this location near Suedberg included American
Goldfinches, 2 Green Herons, a Great Blue Heron with an apparent
injured leg, fledged Eastern Phoebes, and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.

WEISHAMPLE: (rb)
A few birds reported included Turkey Vulture, Tufted Titmouse, Barn
Swallow, and American Crow.

AUBURN: (jp)
Birds from the Deerview Road area included a Great Blue Heron devouring
many of the local pond fish, Barn Swallows, Tree Swallows, American
Goldfinches, House Finches, lots of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, 2 Red-
tailed Hawks, Wild Turkeys with poults, Indigo Buntings, Downy Wood-
peckers, Eastern Bluebirds, American Crows, and Turkey Vultures. Also
a Coyote was seen wandering in the area.

SGL-286 SCHUYLKILL HAVEN: (tc)
On 8/7 there were more mosquitoes than birds at this gamelands area.
Birds seen were 4 Cedar Waxwings, Great Blue Heron, Song Sparrow,
American Goldfinch, Mallard, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Carolina Wren.

ADAMSDALE: (vc)
Birds reported from this location included Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Blue
Jay, Northern Cardinal, Chipping Sparrow, House Sparrow, Song Sparrow,
House Wren, familes of American Crows, Northern Mockingbird, House
Finch, American Goldfinch, Mourning Dove, Chimney Swift, Northern
Flicker, Barn Swallow, Tree Swallow, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Cedar
Waxwing, Black-capped Chickadee, Eastern Bluebird, and Eastern
Towhee.

POTTSVILLE: (ac,bc,bmc)
On 8/4 Blue Jays were confirmed to be nesting behind the soccer fields
along the Gordon Nagle Trail.
On 8/6 a GREAT EGRET and a Great Blue Heron were both seen flying
high over the Pottsville High School football field.

LUTZ VALLEY ROAD - WAYNE TWP: (bc)
A Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest was observed with two youngsters
this past week, with the female feeding them on 8/3.

LAKE WYNONAH: (dkl)
Reported from this location for the week was a huge flock of European
Starlings, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Common Grackles, totalling in the
area of 3000 to 4000 birds. Also quite a few American Goldfinches were
being seen.

LANDINGVILLE DAM & MARSH: (tc)
50 species of birds were observed on 8/7, some of which were 7 Great
Blue Herons, GREAT EGRET, 3 Green Herons, 5 Wood Ducks, an adult
BALD EAGLE, 3 OSPREYS, 2 Killdeer, 2 Chimney Swifts, Eastern Wood-Pewee, 7 Eastern Phoebes, Great Crested Flycatcher, 7 Red-
eyed Vireos, 2 Bank Swallows, 15 Black-capped Chickadees, 8 Tufted
Titmice, 3 White-breasted Nuthatches, 3 Carolina Wrens, 14 Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers, 3 Eastern Bluebirds, a full-grown young Wood Thrush,
Northern Mockingbird, 4 Cedar Waxwings, 3 Black-and-white Warblers,
American Redstart, 8 Common Yellowthroats, Eastern Towhee, 2 Field
Sparrows, 11 Indigo Buntings, and 12 American Goldfinches.

SGL-227 near TUSCARORA STATE PARK: (dkr,nt)
Birds on 8/7 included PINE WARBLER, Black-throated Green Warbler,

Yellowthroat, Black-and-white Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Chestnut-sided

On the night of 8/7 there were at least 2 BARRED OWLS calling, one
of which started out with an Eastern Screech-Owl "screech-scream",
before continuing with the normal "who cooks for me".

Comments: Nice numbers of Great Egrets in the county this week,
including one in a most unusual location. Swatara State Park hosted
Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, and Black-crowned Night-Heron, as well as Great Egret. So much rain during July causing water levels to
be quite high, with very little in mudflat areas to be found, thereby not
much in shorebird activity for our county.

Birds from 7/26 thru 7/31 included 3 GREAT EGRETS, Green Herons, Great Blue Herons, Belted Kingfishers, Cedar Waxwings, 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Wood Thrush, HERMIT THRUSH,
Eastern Wood-Pewee, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbirds,
House Finches, Carolina Wrens, Common Yellowthroats, Red-eyed
Vireos, and Indigo Buntings.

SWATARA STATE PARK: (tc)
Birds seen during the evening of 8/1 included an immature BLACK-
CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 2 GREAT EGRETS, Green Heron, 2 Great
Blue Herons, White-eyed Vireo, 4 Eastern Phoebes, Brown-headed
Cowbird, Turkey Vulture, 12 American Goldfinches, 2 Tufted Titmice,
Red-bellied Woodpecker, 2 Northern Flickers, 4 Cedar Waxwings,
Eastern Wood-Pewee, 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 3 Carolina Wrens,
2 Common Yellowthroats, 20 Barn Swallows, 6 Eastern Bluebirds, 2
Field Sparrows, 19 American Robins, Red-winged Blackbird, 3 Northern
Cardinals, 13 Wood Ducks, and a ton of mosquitoes.

POTTSVILLE: (bmc,tc,mw)
On 8/1 there were 2 Cooper's Hawks seen at the top of Main Street in
Mt. Carbon, just outside the gate of Calvary Cemetery.
On 7/28 there were 5 Broad-winged Hawks seen in this same general
area.
On 7/28 a GREAT EGRET was seen flying over the Gordon Nagle Trail,
just outside Pottsville. A Cooper's Hawk and a Black-throated Blue
Warbler were also seen near the railroad in this area that same day.
During the week a Red-tailed Hawk was seen flying over the Pottsville
High School football field, practically every day during cross country
practice.
On 7/31 a very dark adult Red-tailed Hawk was seen circling over South
Centre Street in Pottsville, and then out over the Tumbling Run Watershed.
During the week COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were still being heard nightly
over the rooftops of downtown Pottsville.

On 7/27 another GREAT EGRET was standing outside of Eifert's
Clothing Store, and then seen taking a stroll up to the Cressona Agway.

Birds for the week include Great Blue Heron, American Kestrel, Red-
tailed Hawk, Northern Flicker, Killdeer, Eastern Kingbird, Indigo Bunting,
Gray Catbird, and Turkey Vulture
